Nelson Mandela

It always seems impossible until it’s done.
— Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela, written and illustrated by the talented Kadir Nelson, is a wonderful introduction into the life of South Africa’s first black president, and world-renowned human rights activist, Nelson Mandela.

The story of Nelson Mandela is an important reminder that racism and segregation is not just an American phenomenon. “European Only” signs sent the same message as “White Only” signs. We highly recommend using this story to broaden every child’s worldview and understanding hard to accept facts about our world.

Some Things to Think About…

  • How do you think it felt for Rolihlahla (Nelson) to have to leave his mother at such a young age? How do you think his mother felt having to make that decision? What circumstances do you think it might take for you to send your child away?

  • Nelson Mandela kept hope alive even after he was imprisoned for many years under terrible conditions. What do you think kept him hopeful? How do you think it would feel to be jailed for wanting to undo injustice? Would you still break the law to do what was right? Why or why not?
