Iggy Peck, Architect
“Iggy Peck, Architect,” by Andrea Beatty has a wonderful message for both children and adults alike.
Iggy Peck cannot help but to create buildings out of some of the most unusual materials - diapers, food, chalk, shoes - you name it, he can build with it!
It’s all good until he enters Second Grade, where building is absolutely forbidden, which leaves Iggy distraught, bored, and disheartened in class.
In a perfect twist, Iggy must use his superb design and construction skills to save his classmates and his disapproving teacher, Miss Lila Greer.
This story, and many others from author Andrea Beatty, honors children as capable, intelligent, co-constructors of knowledge who have so much to offer -as long as we provide opportunities for them to do so.
Some things to think about…
If you could spend all your time doing one thing, what would it be? What is your talent or passion?
Activity idea: Keep a research journal about your ideas, special talent or passion. Look for other people who have the same interest as you. What makes them successful? Use pictures, drawing and writing to document your work.
Activity idea: Bizarre Building! Think of the weirdest thing you could build with…got it? Now build with it! What challenges did you come across? How can you overcome them?
