Every Little Thing
“Every Little Thing” is a children’s book adapted from the song “Three Little Birds” by Bob Marley. His oldest daughter, Cedella Marley wrote the story. Bob Marley’s music is known all over - “Three Little Birds” being one of the most famous tunes. In the author’s note, Marley says that she wanted to keep spreading her father’s messages of love and hope - especially to our children. And honestly, they need it.
In the story, three little birds follow children around and offer them melodies of encouragement every time they see children worry. The images and updated lyrics show relatable childhood experiences - feeling lonely, making a mistake, maybe being afraid to sleep in your own room.
It reminds us of Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood and the newer Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood. They all use strategy songs - short, catchy melodies for children to sing to help them with various emotions. Children need all the tools we can offer to help them learn to manage these feelings. Music is a readily available tool that offers children (and adults) words to manage emotions, as well as a mindful moment to step out of the situation before it gets overwhelming.
The illustrations by Vanessa Brantley-Newton are lovely in and of themselves. Bright, clean colors are used to depict children of a variety of ethnicities all playing together. Our favorite details in her illustrations are the hints of iconic Bob Marley images woven into the pictures. The images of Marley spark memories for parents, intrigue in our children and hopefully a conversation between the two about a very cool musician.
There is a lot to take away from this book. We hope that you read and sing it over and over again, spreading messages of love and hope.
Some things to think about…
Why do you think music can change how we feel?
In what ways do you think music and feelings are connected?
Activity: Paint while listening to music. Create an illustration for that song. If that song had a picture, what would it look like?
